Oh boy, I’m starting to not notice humor/sarcasm in texts if there’s no smiley face emoticon in them

What has happened to me? I used to get a little annoyed when somebody couldn’t tell I was kidding in a text, being sarcastic, preferring that I put some kind of smiley face in a text/email as a humor heads up.

But… more and more I’M the one who hasn’t been able to tell when someone is kidding.

I’M NOW THE ONE WHO NEEDS THE SMILEY FACE. I’M THE ONE COMPLAINING HOW TONE IS NOT CONVEYED ON TEXT OR EMAILED.

Holy hell.  This is bad.

      1. mmmm hmmm, the Japanese students who visit us have a habit of saying jodan after even verbal jokes to avoid confusion.

  1. I know this feeling. I work in Internetland and sometimes I can’t decipher humor or not. Especially since so much of my communication is professional based. And then sometimes someone throws in a smiley and I’m like: what? HOW UNPROFESSIONAL. But if a friend forgets their stupid winky face I’m like: Uh, are you mocking me? Are you serious? What is going on.

    It’s terrible.

    To sum it up: =l

      1. Although to be fair I think our house was full of awesome noises throughout his visit. Him and my housemate down the hall and Cern and I in my room.

I think the neighbours hated us. Sorry, not sorry!

  2. I need the smile Rex. For non English speaking people, some jokes are not seen as jokes. The smile reassure us it’s fine… 🙂
(Also the crazy sensitive chicks need them… and maybe the horny too) 😀
